Born in London, England. Linda's first steps in the entertainment business were made as a pre-teen actress. She had bit-parts in fashionable 60s films, Help and A Taste Of Honey. She quit acting and school to play in bands, and soon formed her own, White Rabbit. In 1967, she first achieved recognition in Europe with Ferris Wheel, before becoming a leading session singer in the early 70s.

R.B. Hudmon - Closer To You 1978

Robert B Hudmon Jr was born on 6 August 1954 at West Point, Georgia and started his singing carer at a very early age. By the time he was 15 he was with Bill Lowery in Atlanta, with staffer Joe South doing most of the writing and producing. And although the music on the 60s recordings is good – particularly Buddy Buie’s arrangements on “Look At Granny Run Run” – I’m not a fan of child soul singing and Hudmon’s unbroken voice just doesn’t do it for me. Even as late as the Capitol single he wasn’t really settled.

But by the time of the original Tomahawk cut of his famous “How Can I Be A Witness” everything was in place. Hudmon had matured into an expressive singer, with a good range in his high baritone voice, with a hint or two of Al Green in the phrasing. The Tomahawk 45 is a rough and ready production, maybe not even much more than a demo, but it was enough to get him to Memphis where the experience of people like Jim Stewart and Bobby Manuel brought out the very best in him.

His series of cuts at the Daily Planet Studio came out on a variety of labels but they were amongst the best that southern soul had to offer at the time. There was the occasional nod to the disco crowd but not enough to detract from the real music. “Witness” was a big hit – and deservedly so – but other tracks were good too. David Porter’s “Ain’t No Need Of Crying” for example, and the Malaco like broken rhythm of “Holdin' On” are fine soul. Like these “Cause You’re Mine Now” and "Bringing You Your Love" were midpaced tunes at which Hudmon seemed most at home; the uptempo “If You Don’t Cheat On Me” – the initial plug side of the hit – is enjoyable but the real cream is the beautiful “I’m Everything You Need”. This rivals almost every other mid 70s ballad for the beauty of the melody and the delicacy of the arrangement, and is perfectly suited to Hudmon’s introspective vocal style. Most of the best cuts were pulled together onto the “Closer To You” set – an LP to listen to time and again.

Like so many singers Hudmon resurfaced in the 80s after the disco boom was over, but the indie releases on R & B and Gold Key are not really up to his previous standard, derivative in style and covers rather than original songs. His reggaefied cut to “Bring It On Home To Me” is interesting but no more. The Nite Life track is a favourite on the modern soul scene in the UK and is now very rare indeed – sadly the quality doesn’t match the records reputation or value. A disappointing way to end a distinguished recording career.

Hudmon passed away on 25 August 1995.

To speak in terms of tradition, consistency and success without the repeated usage of the letter "i" would be an understandably difficult feat for Eddie Thomas. In fact, it has become a tradition for Eddie to produce some very consistent and successful acts whose names begin with the letter "i". Two groups come to mind are the worlds-renowned and highly acclaimed "Impressions," Eddie"s first successful group, and "The Independents" who rendered the national number one hit "Leaving Me" along with several other million sellers. With all due consideration " The Individuals" have the makings of immortality, and under the skillful guidance of executive producer Eddie Thomas and producer Paul Serrano, have put forth an effort that showcases them as the cream of a fine crop of Chicago talent. The Individuals also helped produce as well as write the songs contained in this album.

Pockets - So Delicious 1979

By the time Pockets recorded its third and final album So Delicious, Columbia was feeling frustrated -- a band that was supposed to be "the next Earth, Wind Fire" had never made it any higher than number 17 on ~Billboard's RB singles chart and had yet to enjoy a real blockbuster smash. Although Pockets had a small following, supergroup status eluded the Baltimore residents. Pockets' admirers hoped that So Delicious would be the group's big commercial breakthrough, but the LP was only a modest seller. While Come Go With Me remains Pockets' best and most essential release, So Delicious is generally decent -- not mind-blowing, but decent. EWF's Verdine White (a brother of Maurice White) produced So Delicious with Robert Wright, which is why the strong EWF influence on "How Do You Think It Feels," "Your Heart's in Trouble," and the single "Catch Me" (which hints at "Boogie Wonderland") should come as no surprise. Even on a cover of the Delfonics' "La La (Means I Love You)," EWF's influence asserts itself. But it isn't like Pockets is going out of its way to emulate EWF; rather, the EWF influence is only one element of the band's overall sound. So Pockets didn't suffer from a lack of originality -- that wasn't the problem. Pockets' problem was the lack of a major hit, and when this LP didn't sell, the band ended up calling it quits.

The standout classic from Curtom disco diva Linda Clifford -- and an album that showed that Chicago could rival Philly in the clubby groove department! Linda has a proud presence that really matches that of her better-known sisters in the City Of Brotherly Love -- and she's singing here with a strong sense of personality that really sets the album apart from other female disco albums of the era. One of the greatest examples of this is her stunning "Runaway Love" -- which has a bad-rapping, almost Marlena Shaw-esque monologue in the middle -- but other tracks are equally nice, and include "Gypsy Lady", "If My Friends Could See Me Now", "Broadway Gypsy Lady", "You Are You Are", and "I Feel Like Falling In Love Again". Arrangements are by Gil Askey -- who also produced the set in collaboration with Curtis Mayfield! CD features the bonus tracks "From Now On" and "You Can Do It". Dusty Groove America
